Doubts about tiny desks
Short answers to the questions we hear most from people working on a desk the size of a bread board.
Will a monitor clamp damage a thin desk?
Clamp pads spread the load, but thin or hollow-edged desks can crush. Check the maker's stated thickness range and use a steel reinforcing plate where one is offered.
Are two monitors realistic on a small desk?
On a desk under 80 cm wide, one arm-mounted monitor plus a laptop on a vertical dock usually beats two screens side by side.
Do cable trays really free surface?
Yes. A power strip with a couple of bricks typically covers about 300 cm². Moving them under the desk gives that area back.
Is a compact keyboard bad for typing?
Not after a short adjustment period. A 75% layout keeps the arrow keys and function row while cutting about 12 cm of width.
Do I need a desk lamp at all?
Often yes. EN 12464-1 suggests about 500 lux for typical office tasks, and ceiling lights alone often fall short. A clip lamp gets there without a base.
How far away should my screen be?
Common ergonomic guidance puts the screen about an arm's length away, roughly 50 to 70 cm. On a shallow desk, an arm lets you pull the screen back past the desk edge.
Can I do this in a rented flat without drilling?
Yes. Clamps, clip lamps, clamp-on trays and adhesive hooks need no drilling. Check each adhesive's rated load and the desk's thickness range.
Is a standing-desk converter worth it on a tiny desk?
Usually not under about 70 cm of width. The converter's base tends to take more area than it frees.
How do I measure my own footprint?
Multiply the width by the depth of each item's contact area in centimetres, add the results, and divide by your desk area. A paper outline traced around each item works too.
